What are the different types of adoption?  Domestic, international and through the foster care system.

What are the pros for adopting domestically?  You will probably get more info about the birth parents, including a health history.  You probably won’t have to travel (as much). You may get to meet/have contact with the birthparent.  You may adopt a newborn.

What are the pros for adopting internationally?  IA is often viewed as more of a “sure thing” with predetermined timeframes.  You do have to travel but this can be exciting, seeing other parts of the world.  You may be able to adopt more than one child at a time.  You may be able to choose the gender which is a benefit for those families that already have more than one male/female child and are seeking the other gender.

What are the pros for adopting through the foster care system?  You can change a life that may have been touched by neglect or violence.  The costs are much less.  You can have the child in your home through the foster system then determine if adoption will work for your situation.

Are there healthy infants available for adoption in the U.S.?
Yes, each year there are tens of thousands of adoptions of healthy newborn babies in the US.  It is not true that most domestic adoptions involve drug addiction.

How long does it take?  Although each situation differs, generally adoptions are completed within 9mos to 2 years.

How much does it cost?  For international adoption, the range is usually $15K-30K.  For domestic adoption, the range is usually $10K-40K.  Foster adoptions often involve much less cost.  The tax credit for adoption is now at $11K.  And many employers offer subsidies for adoption.

Can single people and gay couples adopt?
Yes.  Domestically there is usually no difference and single and/or gay parents may use the profiles here to share their unique situations.  With international adoption, some countries have restrictions so research your options carefully.

Becoming an adoptive parent is to commit yourself to the adoption process, which does not stop when a baby or child is placed with you. It's a life long commitment not only to yourself and to your child, but to honor your child's birthparents as your children grow and want to learn about their origin. If you've come this far, you've probably realized that biology is not a crucial factor in the parent/child relationship. Your heart is open and ready to accept who is meant to be your child. Like the anticipation of any baby, the process does not come without its share of fear and joy. Becoming and being an adoptive parent can be a struggle at times, but when the day is quiet, and your little on is in your arms where they belong, it's well worth all you have to go through.
