Q: What are the different types of adoption?
-
A: The two main types of adoption are infant adoption and special needs adoption (older children fall into this category).
You may adopt either domestic or international children using either a private or public agency or an attorney. The contact between adoptive parent(s) and birthparent(s) can range from open to closed.
-
Q: What are the benefits for adopting domestically?
- A:
You will probably get more info about the birth parents, including a health history.
You probably won't have to travel (as much). You may get to meet/have
contact with the birthparent. You may adopt a newborn.
- Q: What are the
benefits for adopting internationally?
- A: International is often viewed
as more of a sure thing with predetermined timeframes. You do have to travel but this can be exciting, seeing other parts of the world.
You may be able to adopt more than one child at a time. You may be able to choose the gender which is a benefit for those families that
already have more than one male/female child and are seeking the other gender.
- Q: What are the benefits for adopting through the foster care
system?
- A:You can change a life that may have been touched by neglect or
violence. The costs are around $2500 and usually offer less risk since most children are or soon to be legally free. You can have the child in your home
through the foster system then determine if adoption will work for your situation.
- Q: Are there healthy infants available for adoption in
the U.S.?
- A: Yes, each year there are tens of thousands of adoptions of

domestic adoptions involve drug addiction.
- Q: How long does it take?
- A: Although each situation differs, generally adoptions are completed within 9mos to 2
years.
- Q: How much does it cost?
- A: For international adoption, the range is usually $15K-30K.For domestic adoption,
the range is usually $10K-40K. Foster adoptions often involve
much less cost. The tax credit for adoption is now at
$13K. And many employers offer subsidies for adoption.

- A: Yes. Domestically there is
usually no difference and single and/or gay parents may use the
